The Subliminal construction of the “backwardness” in the news from El Universal on the Venezuelan constitutional reform of 2007

Resumo: This paper analyzes the representation built by Venezuelan newspaper El Universal about the constitutional reform proposed by Hugo Chavez in 2007. It starts with the assumption that the news reproduces the discourse of “backwardness” associated by liberal ideology with the anti-liberal models that thrived in Latin America in other historical moments. To check it out, it undertakes an analysis based on the fundamentals of the French school of discourse analysis. The study showed that the majority discursive marks in coverage associate to the reform the main arguments of liberal ideology in the criticism of anti-liberal models. It follows that, when these senses are reverberate, El Universal reproduces, in a subliminal way, the discourse of “backwardness”.

Comienza con la suposición de que la noticia reproduce el discurso de “retraso” vinculado por la ideología liberal con los modelos anti-liberales que florecieron en América Latina en otros momentos históricos. Para comprobar que funciona, se lleva a cabo un análisis basado en los fundamentos de la escuela francesa de análisis del discurso. El estudio demostró que las marcas discursivas de la mayoría de la cobertura asocia a la reforma los principales argumentos de la ideología liberal en la crítica de los modelos anti-liberal. De ello se deduce que, cuando se hace eco de estos sentidos, El Universal reproduce, de manera subliminal, el discurso de “retraso”.O presente trabalho analisa a representação construída pelo jornal venezuelano El Universal sobre o projeto de reforma constitucional proposto por Hugo Chávez em 2007. Parte-se da hipótese de que o noticiário reproduz o discurso do “atraso” associado pela ideologia liberal a modelos anti-liberais que vicejaram na América Latina em outros momentos históricos. Para verificá-la, empreende-se uma análise calcada nos fundamentos da escola francesa de análise do discurso. O estudo evidencia que as marcas discursivas majoritárias na cobertura associam à reforma os principais argumentos da ideologia liberal na crítica a modelos anti-liberais.
