This article analyses the biodegradation of two collections that are part of the documentary heritage of UFSM. The study emphasizes the importance of preserving historical documents, one of the fundamental functions for the conservation of library collections. The research focuses on the following environmental problems: microorganisms present in the library studied, and conditions of humidity, lighting, ventilation and temperature, all collected in a one year period. The diagnosis was made by direct observation of the collections, making it possible for one to identify the needs for conservation and preservation of these environments and devise an action plan. For this research, theoretical references, photographic surveys and the collection and identification of microbiological agents, humidity, lighting, ventilation and temperature conditions were studied. The results identified the Bacillus sp., Serratia plymuthica, Acinetobacter sp., Bordetella trematum, Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter agglomerans, Moraxella, Micrococcus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Aeromonas sp., Enterococcus sp., Cedecea lapagei, Nocardia sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi Penicillium sp., Fusarium sp. and Cladosporium sp., pathogenic or allergenic microrganisms. In data analysis it was found that there is the need to use resources to correct high levels of humidity and temperature in the Library of UFSM.
