Appropriation of memory by Information Science and the legitimating role of Memory Institutions

It aims to reflect on the approach / interdisciplinarity / contributions that the field of collective memory has for Information Science. For this, we seek to understand how the process of appropriation of the concept of memory in the area of Information Science and how the Memory Institutions collaborate in the process of legitimizing social memory. It performs an exploratory research through a bibliographical review, as a methodological procedure for the construction of this work. Contextualizes the emergence of memory in the field of philosophy and other areas of Human Sciences. It considers that the memory arises from a restricted understanding and that, later, is appropriated by the Social Sciences, that understand the memory from a wide and collective perspective. It presents indications of the process of appropriation of the concept of memory in Information Science. It emphasizes that, given the multiple possibilities of performing works in the field of memory, it is to understand the social function played by the Institutions of Memories, considered institutions that play a relevant role in the maintenance of social identities and in the legitimation of their memories. It concludes that memory as a mechanism of social representation is indispensable for the social formation of identities and that its consolidation process in Information Science is yet to happen.
