Characteristics of the Information Searching Process of Researchers from Unisinos in the Area of Psychology

Resumo: The article investigates the characteristics of the searching process of Psychology professors/researchers from “Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos” - Unisinos. It approaches the characteristics of the process, such as the stage of the research project in which the subjects search for information, the person who normally carries out this activity, the sources used, and favoured locations for information searches. The data were collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire filled out during an interview. Data analysis allowed the description of patterns of information searching behaviour of the professors/researchers, the characteristics of this process and barriers encountered. Results showed that in order to search for information professors/ researchers use CD-ROM and on-line databases and avoid printed abstracts. National and international printed journals are habitually used by them, whereas electronic journals are not well-known yet. Internet services are frequently used, mainly e-mail and search engines, but the same does not happen to discussion lists. People as sources of information are called upon for sharing knowledge among researchers within their own institution as well as outside. Barriers encountered were categorised as Personal, Institutional, and Environmental or Technological.

Aborda as características desse processo, entre elas as etapas do projeto de pesquisa em que realizam a busca de informação, quem geralmente faz esta atividade, quais os tipos de fontes utilizadas assim como o local preferido para a realização da busca de informação. Foi aplicado um questionário semi-estruturado, aplicado através de uma entrevista, que possibilitou traçar um perfil do comportamento de busca de informação realizado pelos professores/pesquisadores, quais as características desse processo e as barreiras encontradas. Constata-se que os professores/pesquisadores utilizam preferencialmente as bases de dados em CD-ROM ou on-line para realizar a busca de informações, não utilizando-se mais os abstracts impressos. Os periódicos impressos nacionais e internacionais possuem boa aceitação entre os professores/pesquisadores, o que não ocorre com os periódicos eletrônicos, ainda pouco conhecidos. Os serviços propiciados pela internet são muito utilizados, principalmente o correio eletrônico e os diretórios de busca, o que não ocorre com as listas de discussão. As fontes pessoais são utilizadas para intercâmbio de conhecimentos entre pesquisadores não somente da própria instituição como de outras.
