Resumo: The paper reflects upon the relationship between public transport and citizenship in a context of urban transformation motivated by the promotion of major events in Rio de Janeiro. Based on ethnographies carried out in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, it analyzes perceptions on the use of public transport and what they reveal about the statuses of its users and the organization of society. It argues that experiences with the transit system in Rio de Janeiro represent specific ways of projecting oneself in time and space, resulting in a relatively subordinate combination of political and social values such as equality and freedom

Com base em etnografias realizadas no Rio de Janeiro e em Buenos Aires analisa as percepções sobre a utilização dos transportes públicos e o que estas revelam acerca da organização da sociedade e do status dos sujeitos que deles fazem ou não uso.
