The Pharaoh's Golden Parade : mummies, museums and Egyptian national identity

This article attempts to analyze some of the visual and oral discourses held during the Pharaohs' Golden Parade, an event that took place in April 2021 in Cairo, Egypt. Therein, 22 mummies of dynastic kings and queens were transferred from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to their new display area at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. We will explore a brief history of Egyptology, of the Egyptian Museum, and of the colonial cooptation of cultural spaces in order to contextualize the analyses on the symbolism of elements present in the Parade. We will discuss the presences and absences of representation in the event in order to provide a reflection on how Egypt uses its past and its cultural and material heritage to reelaborate its historical narratives according to its political concerns in the present.
