From charity to science: public health assistance in the State of Pará between the 19th and 20th centuries

Resumo: This article aims analyzing the process of institutionalization of public health care in the State of Pará/Brasil, at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. For this purpose, the use of extensive official documentation such as government messages and reports, letters from authorities, health service correspondence among others were used. These sources, when read against the intentions of those who produced them, as Walter Benjamin suggested, are capable of revealing the negotiations and conflicts within the institutions in which scientific medicine has taken over the spaces previously dedicated to charity.
