In the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Brazil underwent a process of redefinition of social and political hierarchies with the decline of slavery and the rise of the Republic. The control of the newly liberated black population and proposals for national projects to redefine the new directions of society were among the concerns of intellectual elites. The construction of a national project was based on racial theories that saw the black population as the "problem" to be solved. This work intends to shed light, following the idea of “multiplicity of the diaspora” in Paul Gilroy's “Black Atlantic”, on the anti-racist trajectories and attitudes of black Bahian intellectuals Manuel Querino and Juliano Moreira, in the face of the scientific racialism that hegemonized in the academic circles of that period.
