Theoretical perspectives of agency studies: an integrative review

Resumo: Human agency has been studied under different theoretical perspectives, with different conceptualizations and perceptions about the construct. The objective of this integrative literature review was to discuss the theoretical perspectives of studies on agency. For this, searches were carried out in Scopus and Web of Science (international databases) for publications until 2020. Based on the 222 selected documents, a co-citation analysis and theoretical analysis of the most cited documents of the main authors of each cluster were performed. In the results, seven clusters were identified that make it possible to discuss the theoretical perspectives of studies on agency. When considering these different perspectives of research and conceptualizations, the multifaceted character of the phenomenon is corroborated and it is concluded that, for an expanded conceptual perception, it is necessary to understand it considering the facets of intentionality, premeditation, self-reactivity, self-reflection, self-efficacy and locus of internal control.

El objetivo de esta revisión integrativa de la literatura fue discutir las perspectivas teóricas de los estudios sobre la agencia. Para ello se realizaron búsquedas en Scopus y Web of Science (bases de datos internacionales) de publicaciones hasta el 2020. A partir de los 222 documentos seleccionados se realizó un análisis de cocitación y análisis teórico de los documentos más citados de los principales autores de cada cluster. En los resultados, fueron identificados siete clusters que permiten discutir las perspectivas teóricas de los estudios sobre agencia. Al considerar estas diferentes perspectivas de investigación y conceptualizaciones, se corrobora el carácter multifacético del fenómeno y se concluye que, para una percepción conceptual ampliada, es necesario comprenderlo considerando las facetas de intencionalidad, premeditación, autorreactividad, autorreflexión, autoeficacia y locus de control interno.A agência humana tem sido estudada sob diferentes perspectivas teóricas, com distintas conceitualizações e percepções sobre o constructo. O objetivo desta revisão integrativa da literatura foi discutir as perspectivas teóricas dos estudos sobre agency. Para isso, foram realizadas buscas na Scopus e Web of Science (bases de dados internacionais) por publicações até 2020. Com base nos 222 documentos selecionados, executou-se uma análise de cocitação e análise teórica dos documentos mais citados dos principais autores de cada cluster. Nos resultados identificou-se sete clusters que possibilitam discutir as perspectivas teóricas dos estudos sobre agency.
