PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AND MARKET VALUE: AN ANALYSIS ON THE COMPANIES LISTED IN BM&FBOVESPA

Resumo: The study investigated the relationship between the performance indicators and the market value of the BM&FBovespa listed companies by analyzing six performance variables (ROA, ROE, Net Margin, EBITDA and EBITDA margin) through Pearson correlation and multiple linear regressions with panel data. In order to meet the general objective proposed, the following specific objectives were adopted: (i) to investigate the conduct of the firms' performance indicators, as well as their market values, over the analyzed period; and (ii) of performance and market value of firms has different conduct depending on the industry in which companies are inserted. The data was extracted from Economática® database, the analyze period comprehend the fiscal year 2009 to 2014 and the sample was formed of 88 companies. The results generally suggested that net margin, EBITDA and EBITDA margin are, in general, the most influential indicators on the market value of Brazilian companies, while ROA and ROE were not relevant to the formation of the stock price of companies. It was also possible to present evidences of differences in the significance of the indicators on the market values ??of firms in function of the respective economic industry.

It was also possible to present evidences of differences in the significance of the indicators on the market values ??of firms in function of the respective economic industry.El estudio investigó la relación entre los indicadores de desempeño y el valor de mercado de las sociedades cotizadas de BM&FBovespa analizando seis variables de desempeño (ROA, ROE, margen neto, EBITDA y margen EBITDA) a través de correlación de Pearson y regresiones lineales múltiples con datos de panel. Para cumplir con el objetivo general propuesto, se adoptaron los siguientes objetivos específicos: (i) investigar la conducta de los indicadores de desempeño de las empresas, así como sus valores de mercado, durante el período analizado; y (ii) comprovar que el desempeño y el valor de mercado de las empresas tiene una conducta diferente dependiendo de la industria en la que se insertan las empresas. Los datos utilizados para calcular las variables dependientes e independientes se extrajeron directamente de la base de datos de Economática®. El período de análisis comprende los años comprendidos entre 2009 y 2014, y todos los valores contables se expresan en reales. La muestra es no probabilística, comprendiendo, por último, 88 sociedades de capital abierto. Los resultados generalmente sugieren que el margen neto, el EBITDA y el margen EBITDA son, en general, los indicadores más influyentes sobre el valor de mercado de las empresas brasileñas, mientras que ROA y ROE no fueron relevantes para la formación del precio de las acciones de las empresas. También fue posible presentar evidencias de diferencias en la significación de los indicadores sobre los valores de mercado de las empresas en función de la respectiva industria económica.O estudo investigou a relação entre os indicadores de desempenho e o valor de mercado das companhias listadas na BM&FBovespa, por meio da análise de seis variáveis de desempenho (giro do ativo, ROA, ROE, margem líquida, EBITDA e margem EBITDA) em correlações de Pearson e regressões lineares múltiplas com dados em painel. Vislumbrando-se atender ao objetivo geral proposto, adotou-se como objetivos específicos: (i) investigar o comportamento dos indicadores de desempenho das firmas, bem como seus valores de mercado, ao longo período analisado e (ii) verificar se a relação entre indicadores de desempenho e valor de mercado das firmas tem comportamento diferenciado em função do setor econômico do qual as empresas estão inseridas. Os dados foram extraídos da base de dados Economática®, o período de análise compreende os anos de 2009 a 2014 e a amostra é composta 88 companhias. Os resultados sugeriram que a margem líquida, o EBITDA e a margem EBITDA são, de modo geral, os indicadores com maior influência sobre o valor de mercado das empresas brasileiras, enquanto giro do ativo, ROA e ROE não se mostraram relevantes para a formação do preço das ações das empresas.
