Women's health access in the context of forced migration in Portugal: vulnerabilities and adaptation

Resumo: Introduction: This article presents the findings, related with the vulnerabilities regarding access to health services felt by refugee women, of a research project conducted in Portugal between 2020 and 2022 as part of the Masters in Intercultural Relations program at Universidade Aberta. Objective: The overall goal was to gain a better understanding of the psychosocial reality of women who arrived in Portugal as a result of forced migration, focusing on the main difficulties of the migratory and adaptation journey - highlighting vulnerabilities related to health and access to health services at the present article - and the protective factors that facilitated their processes of resilience, adaptation, and social integration. Methodology: To that end, the protagonists' meanings for their experiences were revealed through nine semi-structured and in-depth interviews with women from Iraq, Syria, and Libya. Results: The investigation uncovered a number of vulnerabilities caused by migratory experience and gender belonging, which justified the intersectional analysis. The findings reveal a number of challenges in the host country, This article is going to focus on the findings concerning health, specifically, the reported vulnerabilities and difficulties related with the access to health care services. Conclusions: The current investigation led to the conclusion that there are serious flaws in Portugal in terms of ensuring full access to health care for forced migrant women, highlighting as major obstacles: a lack of information in a language other than portuguese, a lack of command of the portuguese language, a lack of knowledge about how health institutions work, and a lack of sensitivity and intercultural skills in care.

Objetivo: El objetivo general era obtener una mejor comprensión de la realidad psicosocial de las mujeres que llegaron a Portugal como resultado de la migración forzada, centrándose en las principales dificultades del viaje migratorio y de adaptación, - destacando las vulnerabilidades relacionadas con la salud y el acceso a los servicios de salud en el presente artículo - y los factores protectores que facilitaron sus procesos de resiliencia, adaptación e integración social. Metodología: Para eso, se revelaron los significados de las protagonistas para sus experiencias a través de nueve entrevistas semiestructuradas y en profundidad con mujeres de Irak, Siria y Libia. Resultados: La investigación reveló una serie de vulnerabilidades provocadas por la experiencia migratoria y la pertenencia de género, que justificaron el análisis interseccional. Los hallazgos revelan una serie de desafíos en el país anfitrión. Este artículo se centrará en los hallazgos relacionados con la salud, específicamente, las vulnerabilidades y dificultades reportadas relacionadas con el acceso a los servicios de salud. Conclusiones: La presente investigación llevó a la conclusión de que existen graves fallas en Portugal en términos de garantizar el pleno acceso a la atención médica para las mujeres migrantes forzadas, destacando como principales obstáculos: la falta de información en un idioma diferente al portugués, la falta de dominio del idioma portugués, falta de conocimiento sobre el funcionamiento de las instituciones de salud y falta de sensibilidad y habilidades interculturales en los servicios de salud.Introdução: Este artigo apresenta as conclusões, relacionadas com as vulnerabilidades no acesso aos serviços de saúde sentidas por mulheres refugiadas, de um projeto de investigação realizado em Portugal entre 2020 e 2022 no âmbito do Mestrado em Relações Interculturais da Universidade Aberta. Objetivo: O objetivo geral foi conhecer melhor a realidade psicossocial das mulheres que chegaram a Portugal em resultado da migração forçada, focando as principais dificuldades do percurso migratório e de adaptação - destacando as vulnerabilidades relacionadas com a saúde e acesso aos serviços de saúde no presente artigo - e os fatores de proteção que facilitaram seus processos de resiliência, adaptação e integração social. Metodologia: Para tal, os significados das vivências das protagonistas foram relevados por meio de nove entrevistas semiestruturadas e em profundidade com mulheres do Iraque, Síria e Líbia. Os resultados revelam uma série de desafios no país de acolhimento. Este artigo vai centrar-se nos resultados relativos à saúde, especificamente, as vulnerabilidades e dificuldades relatadas no acesso aos serviços de saúde.
