NEOPENTECOSTAL ETHICS AND THE SPIRT OF NEOLIBERALISM: elements of bolsonarist rhetoric

We reflect here on some affinities between (neo)pentecostalism and neoliberalism, and how some of its elements are useful in the current political rhetoric, especially in the speeches and in the practice of the current president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro. If reality is multiple, social dynamics and understanding this requires multifaceted approaches. The discussion developed here emerged from the approach of three reflections that are intertwined: the transformations in brazilian pentecostalism; the debate about neoliberal hegemony in Brazil; and the reflection on how these waves embody Bolsonaro's discursive materiality. From the encounter between perspectives and conceptions of the sociology of religion, political economy, and the analysis of the performance-discursive elements, we aim to contribute to the debate on politics, religion and society, expressing the importance of these interlacing for the understanding of factors of reality contemporary brazilian culture.
