RELIGIOUS RACISM, WHITENING AND LEGITIMITY:: THE CASE OF THE FIRST WAVE OF UMBANDA IN RIO DE JANEIRO IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Resumo: ABSTRACT: This paper aims to understand how religious racism corroborated the construction of the process of legitimation of the Umbanda religion in the early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro. We start from the premise that the whitening of ethnic-religious manifestations of African origin in the country was the main instrument that enabled the transition from popular macumbas to Umbanda, evidencing a flagrant racist connotation. We consider that the annunciation of Umbanda by Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, on November 15, 1908, was taken as a founding landmark that historicized the religion, basing the differentiation between Umbanda and popular macumbas. UmbandaRÉSUMÉ: Dans cet article, nous cherchons à comprendre comment le racisme religieux a corroboré la construction du processus de légitimation de la religion Umbanda au début du XXe siècle dans l'État de Rio de Janeiro. Nous partons du postulat que le blanchiment des manifestations ethnico-religieuses d'origine africaine dans le pays a été le principal instrument qui a permis le passage des macumbas populaires à l'Umbanda, témoignant d'une connotation raciste flagrante. Nous considérons que l'annonce de l'Umbanda par Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, le 15 novembre 1908, a été considérée comme un repère fondateur qui a historicisé la religion, fondant la différenciation entre l'Umbanda et les macumbas populaires. UmbandaNeste artigo buscamos compreender de que maneira o racismo religioso corroborou a construção do processo de legitimação da religião de Umbanda no início do século XX no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Partimos da premissa de que o branqueamento das manifestações étnico-religiosas de origem africana no país foi o principal instrumento que viabilizou a transição das macumbas populares para a Umbanda, evidenciando flagrante conotação racista.
