Resumo: The objective of the study was to evaluate the relation between nutritional status and maternal quality of life (QoL) in mental health. It is a cross-sectional study performed with mothers attended at the Basic Health Units of the municipality of Santa Cruz/RN. Maternal nutritional status was evaluated by Body Mass Index (BMI). QoL was measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), referring to anxiety and depressive symptoms, and WHO-5 Well-being Index (WHO-5), referring to psychological well-being and screening for depression. The data were analyzed in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, and presented by descriptive statistics, Spearman’s Correlation and Chi-square tests, adopting p<0.05 as statistical significance. The total of 169 mothers were interviewed, mean age 28.4 ± 5.8 years, with up to two children (76.9%) and overweight (62.7%). The total number of children and maternal BMI showed a significant and positive correlation (p = 0.003, r = 0.223). Regarding QoL, the K10 found 34.5% of the population with some degree of mental disorder and WHO-5 88.8% with some type of depressive disorder. QoL was not statistically related to nutritional status (K10: p = 0.755 and x² = 3.4, WHO-5: p = 0.062 and x² = 5.6). It was observed, however, that the majority of women with some possibly mental disorder were overweight (K10 = 64.4% and WHO-5 = 54.3%). It is observed the need for multidisciplinary actions aimed at the public and other studies evaluating other variables that may affect maternal QoL.

It is observed the need for multidisciplinary actions aimed at the public and other studies evaluating other variables that may affect maternal QoL.O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a relação entre estado nutricional e qualidade de vida (QV) materna no âmbito da saúde mental.
