The present work was part of a research line on slow filtration created by the Laboratory of Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation (LARHISA) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN/Brazil). Its main objective was to evaluate the maturation time of slow sand filters when supplied with water from a coastal lagoon with low turbidity and moderate color, designing a slow sand filtration system on a pilot scale, working in duplicate. The design and implementation of the filtration system involved three major steps: preparation of materials, filter bed design and assembly of the filtration system. In partnership with the Water and Sewer Company of Rio Grande do Norte (CAERN/Brazil), it was possible to install the slow sand filters near the lagoon studied. The evaluation of the maturation time was performed by analyzing parameters such as turbidity, apparent color, total coliforms, E. Coli bacteria and pH. With total operation lasting 34 days, in spite of limiting factors, the filters showed indicative maturation in the last week of analysis. With the results obtained it was possible to estimate that slow sand filters operating with the water of the coastal lagoon studied can take approximately 20 to 30 days to mature.
