The objective of this research was to analyze the information of a group of rural workers regarding oral cancer and its association with socio-demographic variables. Methods: This exploratory and cross - sectional study was conducted in 1385 rural workers from a region of the Northeast of Brazil who answered a questionnaire previously validated, containing questions regarding socio - demographic data and information on oral cancer. Chi-square test was used to verify association between the variables and the level of significance was 5%. Results: Of the 1385 rural workers who participated in the sample, the male gender (53.2%) prevailed, with a mean age of 53 years. The majority were low-income (73.2%) and had low (65.9), or none (14.6%) level of schooling. There was a significant association between the information variables: heard about CB and the independent variables: income and schooling; Knows how CB presents and sex, age and schooling; And knows what can cause CB and the variables gender and schooling. Conclusions: It is concluded that the population of rural workers studied shows unsatisfactory information about the factors that may contribute to the development of CB and do not know how this lesion presents, although they have already heard about it. The low level of information about CB is associated with low level of schooling and income.
