Resumo: In this paper, the effect of geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) on settlement of shallow foundations was evaluated, based on results of plate load tests available in the technical literature. The tests were performed using sand, different types of geosynthetics, and different geometric layouts for the reinforced soil mass. The settlement improvement factor (fmr) was calculated by analyzing the effect of some variables, such as reinforcement tensile strength and reinforced soil geometry. Deformation modulus values for GRS were also evaluated using the expression suggested by Han (2015). The value of fmr was calculated for different levels of applied stresses. Values from 10 to 80% of bearing capacity for plate load tests only with soil (s), without reinforcement, were used. It was observed that the fmr showed a very large range from 0.58 to 3.53. Although all the analyzed parameters present, theoretically, an effect on the reinforced system, none trend was observed for the studied data. According, correlations of fmr with the evaluated variables were not established. After reducing the universe of data, considering geometric parameters that present stabilization or that are within the range of optimal values, the value of fmr showed a smaller variation, with values from 1.0 to 2.0, approximately. The ratio of reinforced soil module (ESR) to the soil modulus (ES) for an applied stress of 10, 20 and 40% s presented average values approximately equal to 6.0; with a coefficient of variation of about 34, 31 and 45%, respectively.
