Resumo: Fishing, whether large or small scale, is essential to provide food, employment, recreation and well-being for people around the world. Therefore, it is vital to know how much fishing draws from the natural environment in order to understand its vulnerability to large-scale exploitation. Nevertheless, fisheries statistics are usually incomplete, with many countries misreporting or not reporting at all how much they extract from the oceans. In this context, the reconstruction of catch data (fishing reconstruction) is the only tool when trying to understand the fishing situation of a given location. Reconstruction may include, for example, estimates of artisanal, industrial, recreational and subsistence fisheries, in addition to providing estimates of bycatch and discards. Through reconstruction it is also possible to characterize fish functional groups, by observing changes not only in the total catches, but also in ecological aspects, such as changes in the trophic level of the target species. Thus, the present work aimed to reconstruct the total fishing catches by the industrial and artisanal fisheries in Rio Grande do Norte State between the years of 2011 and 2014. This work is part of a worldwide effort to reconstruct fisheries data, led by the international research initiative known as Sea Around Us, which seeks to estimate data never officially reported or intentionally misreported by each country. Fishing in Rio Grande do Norte is mainly maintained by artisanal fishing, although the industrial sector is still expressive and growing. Together, the two activities caught more than 70,000 tons in the four years studied. Fisheries have not changed target species over the years and 71% of the total fish caught (in tons) are pelagic fish, even though 43% of the species that make up the fishery are associated with reefs. It is essential that reconstruction studies are combined with official fisheries statistics so that there is a real understanding of the vulnerabilities of fisheries in the state. With data that are closer to the extractive reality of fishing, adequate estimates can be generated, which correspond to the minimum tools essential for the direction of fishing management policies.
