Resumo: The aim of this study was to clinically evaluate the effect of the basic periodontal treatment performed in patients rehabilitated with lower (Kennedy Class I) removable partial dentures (RPD) both in direct and indirect abutments. Thirty patients diagnosed with periodontal disease were treated and evaluated according to the following periodontal parameters: plaque index (VPI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (PAL) and keratinized mucosa (KC). These parameters were compared between the direct and indirect abutments at baseline, after 6 and 18 months. The data was analyzed by statistical tests of Friedman and Wilcoxon for all variables. The results showed that most patients were female and the average age of 61 years old (± 7.54). The PI and GI reduced over time, wherein the direct abutments were the most affected by PI (p = 0.001). There was a PD reduction after 6 months which was maintained up to 18 months. In general, direct abutments had significantly higher values for PD, GR and PAL (p = 0.029). The results indicated that the parameters of oral hygiene PI, GI and PD improved, however, the direct pillars were the most affected teeth compared to indirect pillars, being statistically significant for all variables except GI, showing that with the treatment and oral hygiene care of the patients, it is possible to maintain the periodontal condition without the use of the prosthesis aggravating this situation.
