Revista Baiana de Enfermagem, Salvador, v.19/20,n.1-3, p.105-112, jan./dez. 2004,jan./dez. 2005.RESUMO:O estudo teve como objetivos verificar a concepção do pai sobre o aleitamento materno, identificar a maneira pela qual ele contribui e o período da amamentação em que colabora com sua companheira no processo de lactação do filho. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista semi-estruturada junto aos pais cujo(a) filho(a) estava na faixa etária de 0-2 anos de idade e freqüentavam os serviços de Imunização e de Acompanhamento de Crescimento e Desenvolvimento da Criança (CD), de cinco unidades de saúde do município de Natal-RN. Os resultados demonstram que alguns pais não têm conhecimento da criança. Sua contribuição no processo da amamentação ocorre como atitudes e ações em relação ao filho, a companheira e aos afazeres domésticos, principalmente nos primeiros seis meses de vida da criança. ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to identify the conception of the father related to breastfeeding, his attitudes about the nursing act and his contribution to the breastfeeding process. The data were collected by semi-structured intervierws with men whose children were up to 2 years of age and that attended the immunization services and the Growth and Development Program(CD) of five health centers in the city of natal, Rn. The results show that there is a relationship between the act of breastfeeding and the historic and political evolution of each períod; some fathers lack knowledge of natural breastfeeding but they consider the milk important for the growth of their children; they develop attitudes and actions in relation to their sons, wives, and tothe household chores, in order to contribute to the sucess of the natural breastfeeding.RESUMEN: _El trajo tuvo como objetivos verificar la concepcon del padre sobre la amamentacion materna, identificar la manera como contribuye y el período de la amamentación en que contribuye con su compañera en el processo de lactación del hijo. La colecta de dados fue realizada através de entrevista semiestructurada junto a los padres cuyo(a) hojo(A) se encontraba en la faja etaria de 0 a 2 años de edad y que frecuentaban los servicios de inmunización y de acompañamiento del crecimiento y desarrolo del Niño(CD), en cinco unidade de salud del municipio de natal, RN. Los resultados demuestran que algunos padres no tienen conocimiento acerca de la amamantación natural, pero reconocen la importancia de la lache humana para el crecimiento del niño.
