Resumo: Urbanization is a global phenomenon and the world is heading to a ratio of about 80% of the urban population, a large proportion in cities, and therefore the problem of transport and its environmental impact arises in cities. Road transport, in general, is responsible for about 22% of greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to causing various respiratory diseases. Urban transport is part of this context and the public transport, in this case in Brazil, is mostly offered by means of diesel buses. One of the strategies used to reduce environmental impacts is the electrification of public transport. The strategies are applied to electric buses (hybrids, battery, fuel cells, trolleybuses), tramway, subway, in addition to electric car and electric bicycle. The state of Rio Grande do Norte has since 2014, held a surplus of electricity, being the largest producer of renewable wind energy in Brazil. The current work, in this context, consists of a conceptual study of the inclusion of wire system in Natal city, considering the lower infrastructure costs compared to other pure electric vehicles, such as light rail and subway, and taking into account the operation and maintenance system similar to the bus, promoting a smoother adoption by the operating companies. The study, taking into account the investment cost in infrastructure, showed that the trolley bus is worthwhile if intensively used, and so a conceptual study is needed and applied in the corridor of Prudente de Morais Ave. The results show that the trolleybus system could bring countless benefits to native citizens, both in terms of preservation of the environment and costs and efficiency, as well as transforming surplus energy into an economic good that improves the well-being of the population.
