The settlement caused by embankments on soft soils is a subject that has been worrying geotechnical engineers over the years because of the difficulty to deal with this type of soil, which usually presents large deformations by settlement and a low bearing capacity. This paper makes estimations by analytical methods and by computational modeling in a 3D settlement analysis software, SETTLE 3D®, evaluating the results obtained by each method. For this, two embankments were analyzed localized near to Sarapuí River on Baixada Fluminense, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, whose available data were published by Ortigão (1980) and Terra (1988). The embankments were built mainly for obtaining information about the local soil, which is a soft clay, and for studying the construction methods of embankments over soft soils. The first embankment was elevated until failure and the second was constructed in stages. The second embankment presented different configurations to each cross section, which could be constructed with vertical drains, with geodrains or without any special drainage. These embankments were instrumented and the measurements of the settlement plates were used on this paper as a basis of comparison for the settlement estimations by analytical methods and the computational methods
