This monograph is an account of the descriptive and qualitative nature of some aspects of non-formal music education contextualized within the local culture of the Felipe Camarão neighborhood in the western part of the city of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The Felipe Camarão Connection Project works with children of the neighborhood and has goals to develop in them a sense of belonging and an appreciation of their own culture. The Felipe Camarão Connection Project has existed for 11 years. It is supported by the non-governmental organization Association Terramar Company to promote the understanding that Man knows and values his origins and can present himself as a thinker and an actor within society. The teaching of music within this project is through the contextualization of music with the tradition of the oral culture which exists in the neighborhood. The Felipe Camarão Connection Project’s target audience is children and young people aged 04 to 24 years. The music teachers in the Felipe Camarão Connection Project are professionals who have identified with the humanized methodology that is developed by the actions promoted by the project. Centuries-old traditions such as the Auto de Bois de Reis (a local dance) by Master Manoel Marinheiro and the sound of the music of Master Cicero da Rabeca have been maintained and promoted by and of students of the project over its 11 years of existence. In the Felipe Camarão Connection Project, music education is synonymous with the possibility of Human expansion.
