Resumo: Oil spills and their impacts in a long term period have been poorly investigated, especially when it comes to onshore oil spills. One of the biggest onshore oil spills took place in Michigan, Kalamazoo on July 26, 2010. Nearly 4 million liters of Diluted Bitumen (Dilbit) were spilled reaching the Kalamazoo River. Extensive efforts were made in order to clean and recover the affected area, as well as concentration and composition surveys of the oiled soil. The main purpose of this article is quantify and qualify the hydrocarbon content in the Kalamazoo River riparian sediments five years after the oil spill. Analytical techniques, such as, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) and GC-MS were used to evaluate the chemical composition changes in 12 soil samples. The results show that the hydrocarbons content went by different kind of degradation mecanism depending on the type of the soil. There was reduction of 12,1% through 5 years. However, it also shows significant concentrations of pretroleum basis componentes, for example, chrysene and pyrnere. These hydrocarbons are Strong indication of oil degradation and cancerous content A correaltion between hydrocarbons were found in the oiled samples, which did not agree with sample 1 (not oiled). It indicates that the contamination comes from one source, the Dilbit spilled by Enbridge Partners.

Um dos maiores derramamentos registrados ocorreu em 2010 em Michigan, Estados Unidos. Cerca de 4 milhões de litros liberados pela Enbridge Partners de betume diluído (dilbit) atingiram o Rio Kalamazoo. Esforços foram feitos para limpeza e recuperação da área atingida, bem como estudos da composição e concentração de hidrocarbonetos no solo contaminado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar e qualificar o teor de hidrocarbonetos presentes no solo das margens do Rio Kalamazoo cinco anos após o acidente. Foram realizadas a análise de hidrocarbonetos totais de petróleo (TPH) e de cromatografia gasosa com detector de massas (CG-EM) em 12 amostras de solo coletadas em locais estratégicos, para averiguar as mudanças na composição química do solo nesse período. Os resultados mostram que o tipo de solo presente influencia na faixa degradação e retenção dos hidrocarbonetos. Houve uma redução média de 12,1% na concentração de hidrocarbonetos totais em relação as amostras coletadas em 2011. Porém, o estudo também mostra concentrações significativas de contaminantes proeminentes do petróleo no solo, como por exemplo criseno e pireno. Tais contaminantes são cancerígenos e indicam degradação do óleo após o derramamento.
