The present work is a study about the drawings made between the years 1962 and 1979 by the patients of the João Machado Hospital, during their praxitherapy sessions, in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. These drawings were classified in 4 volumes and are part of the audiovisual collection of Occupational Therapy division of the hospital. The main objective was the realization of an exhibition in the gallery of the Art Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), from November 28th, 2016, to December 2nd, 2016. Authors like Arley Andriolo, Gláucia Villas-Boas, Otávio Pompeu e Silva, Magdalena Toledo among others, as well as the contribution of Osório Cesar, Nise da Silveira and Mário Pedrosa, were fundamentals for the comprehension and the historical and cultural contextualization, establishing a relation between Art and Madness, and situating when and how the productions made by mentally ill people began to interest the artistic and cultural environment of that time and gained the status of Art. Notions about Brute Art (1945), Virgin Art (1949) and Unusual Art (1981) have also been presented in order to promote a lively discussion on Art and Madness in the context of Modernism and how this movement influenced the critics and artists of that time. We will also discuss the importance of artistic mediation inside the occupational therapy workshops, taking as an example the experience of Almir Mavignier at the “Engenho de Dentro” workshop, in Rio de Janeiro.
