Correlação entre a força muscular periférica e funcionalidade em pacientes internados

Introduction: In the hospital scenario, which involves the intensive care unit (ICU) and the infirmary, it is a complex dynamic performed by a multiprofessional team. The hospitalization can cause muscle weakness, decrease of the flexibility and consequently reduction of the functionality, that can last up to two years. Objective: To evaluate the existence of a correlation between peripheral muscle strength and function in hospitalized patients at the Regional Hospital Dr. Mariano Coelho, in the city of Currais Novos, Rio Grande do Norte. Methodology: This is a transversal study, conducted in the municipality of Currais Novos - RN, in Dr. Mariano Coelho Hospital. The study sample consisted of 121 patients. The Medical Research Council (MRC) and palmar grip dynamometer were used to evaluate the peripheral muscle strength. To evaluate the functionality, the Functional Status Score for the ICU (FSS-ICU) scale was used. Analysis was performed using descriptive statistical analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Student's t-test and the Pearson or Spearman correlation test. Results: The study sample consisted of 124 patients with a mean age of 61.7 ± 17.5, 52.4% of whom were male, with higher frequency of hospital admission to heart disease 39.8%. And presented a statistically significant weak positive correlation (r = 0.447, p <0.0001) between the MRC and FSS scores. Conclusion: Hospital admission results in a reduction in the peripheral muscle strength of hospitalized patients, and this loss correlates weakly, positively and significantly with impairment in their functionality.
