Cockroaches may be found in almost all kind of habitats. Most of them are wild, however a small group of those insects live in urban areas and may come in contact with people. They are vector of many micro-organisms which may cause deseases in humans. The objective of this study is to verify the occurrence of enterobacteria on the cuticle of Periplaneta americana in both male and female catched in Centro de Biociências in Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, investigate if there is resistent bacteria regarding tested antibiotics and analise diferences between male and female of cockroaches when it comes down to the occurrence of enterobacteria. In all, twenty cockroaches were collected in the fat boxes and then taken to the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology, where the bacteria present in the cuticle of those insects. The bacteria were sown on MacConkey agar and subjected to Gram test, biochemical tests and antibiogram. 42 bacteria were isolates and Escherichia coli represented more than 80% of strains and were present in both males and females of P. americana. However, two species of bacteria appeared only in males and only two in females. The antibiogram showed bacteria resistant to Imipenem, an important broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is possible to find bacteria on the cuticle in both sexes of Periplaneta americana, including enterobacteria resistant to carbapenem. Further studies regarding the mechanism of resistance of these bacteria are important to understand whether these bacteria have developed an efficient resistance mechanism against that antibiotic.
