Avaliação da poluição em duas praias do Rio Grande do Norte (Praia do Meio e Pirangi do Norte): relação com o uso da praia

The intensive and uncontrolled use of beaches promotes negative effects such as the disposal and accumulation of solid waste and wastewater, compromising the environmental quality and health of users. The research aimed to evaluate the pollution of Rio Grande do Norte beaches by solid wastes and wastewater and its relation to the use of beaches. Monthly on a weekend (around 13h), was held the count of users present on a 300m stretch, considering everyone on the sand and also in the water. Sampling of solid waste was also carried out on a stretch of 300 meters long by 10 meters wide, at the strandline (maximum level of high tide). The items were ranked according to the composition and the most likely source. Water samples were collected in water outlets served and in the sea (front of the outlets) for analysis of nitrate and ammonia. During the sample period has registered a total of 2,996 people to the Pirangi do Norte beach and 6.233 people to the Meio beach, indicating that the Meio beach receives more than twice as many visitors compared to Pirangi. A total of 13.442 items of solid waste over the three months to the two beaches was recorded. Although the types of waste were similar between the beaches, the amount ranged from quite evident (3,481 items for the Pirangi and 9.961 for the Meio beach). Plastic was the category most abundant in both beaches, for a total of 5.302 items for the Meio beach and 1,856 in Pirangi do Norte, compared to other categories. January stood out due to a higher amount of waste compared to the November and February months. Regarding the most likely origin of the waste, the items related to the users were the most abundant, accounted for 83% (3,794 items) for the Meio beach and 89% (1,346 items) for Pirangi do Norte. The values of nitrate and ammonia were higher than those determined by CONAMA Resolution 357/2005, only for wastewater in the Pirangi beach. With respect to bathing, Pirangi had adequate condition in all evaluated dates; already Meio beach had improper condition for a week in February. With regard to water quality, the data appears to indicate that the analyzed beaches have good condition most of the time. Studies of spatial and temporal variability of pollution on beaches can result in a better understanding about the environmental quality of these locations, serving subsidies coastal management actions
