Resumo: Floodplains are ecologically fertile environments due to the high exchange of sediments and organic matter during and after the flooding of the river and other river channels and floodplain. The floodplains have ecological potential and biological exploitation of great value to man, which in turn uses and occupies these sedimentary features, not always responsibly. The occupation by the waters of the flood plain, even ephemeral or seasonal, may be as a problem of regional planning point of view to a country where land use planning was strongly influenced by water. In this context, the present study aimed to identify the land uses that are affected by the pulses of the Piranhas-Açu river floods in its low course (RN). The methodology of this monographic work was divided into three steps: 1) Consultation and bibliographic texts reviews, scientific articles, inventories and other manuscripts that address theoretical and applicable form the concepts that guided this research, in addition, it sought to compile information study area. 2) The second step is the assembly of a database combined with a Geographic Information System (GIS). 3) This last stage was all processing of data combined with GIS, this, thematic maps and tables were produced, which were analyzed and understood to arrive at concise results. The area of the river-floodplain of the Piranhas-Açu river system in its lower course, which also includes the same river flood plain is about 668.3 km2, and when there are events of flood pulses, the main activities economic are reached. This study sought to show that the studied stretch of the river-floodplain system suffers flood pulses, and the large pulses end up being harmful, as was the 2008. Was taken as the area of greatest proportion of the flood event occurred in 1985 because it was the largest ever recorded, however, the full 2008 proved to be a disaster because of the economic and social damage.

As planícies de inundação apresentam potencial ecológico e exploração biológica de grande valia para o homem, que por sua vez, usa e ocupa estas feições sedimentares, nem sempre de forma responsável. A ocupação pelas águas da planície aluvial, mesmo que efêmera ou sazonal, pode se constituir como uma problemática do ponto de vista do ordenamento territorial para um país onde o ordenamento territorial foi fortemente influenciado pelos recursos hídricos. Nesse contexto, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar os usos da terra que são atingidos pelos pulsos de inundações do rio Piranhas-Açu, em seu do baixo curso (RN). A metodologia deste trabalho monográfico foi dividido em 3 etapas: 1) Consultas e revisões bibliográficas de textos, artigos científicos, inventários e demais manuscritos que abordam de forma teórica e aplicável os conceitos que nortearam esta pesquisa, além disto, buscou-se compilar informações da área de estudo. 2) A segunda etapa consistiu na montagem de uma base de dados aliados a um Sistema de Informações Geográficas (SIG). 3) Esta última etapa compreendeu todo o processamento dos dados aliados ao SIG, neste, foram produzidos mapas temáticos e tabelas, os quais foram analisados e compreendidos para se chegar a resultados concisos. A área do sistema rio-planície de inundação do rio Piranhas-Açu em seu baixo curso, a qual compreende também a planície de inundação do mesmo rio tem cerca de 668,3 km2, e quando há eventos de pulsos de inundação, as principais atividades econômicas são atingidas. Este estudo procurou mostrar que o trecho estudado do sistema rioplanície de inundação sofre pulsos de inundação, sendo que os grandes pulsos acabam se tornando danoso, como foi o de 2008.
