Avaliação longitudinal da condição de saúde bucal em idosos a partir da aplicação de um indicador multidimensional

Introduction: The oral health condition of elderly can be influenced by several factors, especially in the socioeconomic-demographic context. Aim: to identify changes in the oral health condition of the elderly over time, based on the application of a multidimensional indicator. Methods: this is an observational and longitudinal study, which was performed in Macaíba / RN. For that, 176 elderly individuals were assessed in 2010/2011 and five years later, using a multidimensional indicator constructed through a factorial analysis with eleven variables. The factors produced had their scores added and categorized from the median, at two levels (favorable and unfavorable oral health). For data analysis, the Student's t-test was used for dependent samples, Chi-Square test and Relative Risk (95% CI). Results: After the factorial analysis, four factors were extracted (teeth present and periodontally impaired, caries attack, household density and age and schooling). The change in oral health condition over time was significant (p <0.001) and represented a worsening of the oral health condition in 18.6% (CI 95%: 12.9 - 24.3) of the sample. Among the factors that compose the indicator, those most related to the change in the oral health condition of these elderly people were caries attack, household density and age. There was no significance between the independent variables of the study and the change in oral health status over time. Conclusion: Few older people have worsened oral health status over time, which such worsening was due to the insufficient access and changes in the family structure of the elderly, reinforcing the importance of the multifactorial indicator as a tool for the of public policies planning targeted to this population.
