Resumo: Objectives: To identify the prevalence of breastfeeding at the first 30 minutes postpartum and the factors associated with this practice in a university child-friendly hospital. Methods: Descriptive transversal study performed with 219 mothers and newborns. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire applied in an interview to mothers during the postpartum period. The prevalence of breastfeeding at the first 30 minutes of newborn’s life was presented in absolute (n) and relative (%) frequencies. Chi-square test was performed to assess the association between the time elapsed for the first breastfeeding and the variables of maternal and neonate exposure. Results: The prevalence of breastfeeding at the first 30 minutes postpartum was 43.8%. Among the factors associated with feeding practice at postpartum, the statistical analysis showed that mothers with an income higher than one minimum wage, breastfed longer than 30 minutes at postpartum, when compared with those with a lower income (p=0,037). Conclusion: The prevalence of early breastfeeding (< 30 minutes postpartum) found was considered low. Furthermore, mothers with income greater than one minimum wage breastfed later, when compared to those with lower income. The maternity where this study was carried out, although considered a child-friendly hospital, still needs internal guidelines to establish a greater incentive to early breastfeeding, regardless of individual factors that may or may not favor breastfeeding at the first hour of life of the newborn.
