Regarded as one of the greatest land marks of society, the process of power generation is a reference in the history of mankind. Biofuels are a topic that currently generates high expectations, both in population and in the scientific community. Brazil is considered and recognized as a widely diverse country, being the leader in global production potential of plant-based biofuels. With advantageous features in their favor, biofuels are considered environmentally friendly. As an incentive to enter smallholders in the production chain and for there to have social inclusion, it was established the Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso do Biodisel (PNPB) [National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel] and the Selo de Combustível Social [Social Fuel Label]. The Brazilian Northeast, even being limited in natural resources for agriculture, is rich when it refers to the great diversity of soil, vegetation and clime. It presents adequate conditions for the development of several oil plants with economic importance, not only for the food industry but also for the production of biodiesel. Therefore, the cultivation of raw materials that participate in the industrial production of biodiesel has a high potential for job creation. Being one of the few countries in the world able to cover its production for many purposes, including oilseeds, Brazil is the second in the world, both as produce rand as consumer of biodiesel. As much as the Northeast has its limitations regarding oil and accentuated climate, its supply and demand related to oilseed species help the region to be able to get potential to enter the supply chain of biodiesel. In this work, a literature review was conducted covering data from 2005 to 2015, in order to identify the potential of the Brazilian Northeast to the biodiesel industry.
