Revista Baiana de enfermagem, Salvador, v.19,n.1/2/3,p.93-103, jan./dez. 2004, jann./dez.2005.O estudo analisa a participação da mãe no Acompanhamento do Crescimento e Desenvolvimento (CD) como um comportamento preventivo em saúde, utilizando o referencial teórico do Modelo de Crenças da Saúde. Foram entrevistas 130 mães de uma unidade saúde, objetivando identificar a sua percepção acerca das ações do CD e da sua participação com seus filhos nessas atividades. Os resultados indicam que as mães participam do programa, embora não o identifiquem quanto à sua natureza preventiva e sim como um programa disponível; acreditam no programa porque têm acesso à consulta médica, qual é vista como o principal benefício; e não percebem a presença do enfermeiro nessas atividades. Conclui-se que as mães possuem noções limitadas dos princípios preventivos do programa e distorcem seu objetivo ao utilizá-lo como meio para o atendimento médico. O estudo aponta a necessidade do(a) enfermeiro(a) assumir seu papel na liderança na promoção da saúde da criança e de educador(a) nas ações do Programa da Assistência. ABSTRACT: The study analyses the participation of mothers in the Growth and Development Program(GD) as a preventive action, based on the Health Behavior Model. Interviews were conducted with 130 mothers to identify their perceptions of the program activities and their participation in the program. The results indicate that the mothers adhere to the scheduled visits although they do not view the GD activities as preventive actions but rather as an available program; they belive that theirs acess to medical assistance is its main benefit; and they do not identify the presence of the nurse in the program. It is concluded that these mothers have limited awareness of the preventive principles of the GD program and therefore distort its main objective when they use it as a means of obtaining medical attention. The study demonstrates the need for the nurse to take her place in the program as a means for obtaining medical attention. RESUMEN: El estudio analiza la participación de la madre en el Programa de Crecimento y Desarrollo(CD) como un comportamiento preventivo de salud, utilizando el referencial teórico del modelo de creencias en la salud. Fueron entrevistadas 130 madres de una unidad de salud, objetivando identificar su percepción acerca de las acciones del CD y la participación con sus hijos en esas actividades. Los resultados indican que las madres participan del programa aunque no lo identifiquen con relación a su natureza preventiva, y sí como um programa disponible. Creen en el programa porque tienen acesso a la consulta médica, la cual es vista como el principal beneficio; y no perciben la presencia del enfermero en esas actividades. Se concluye que las madres poseen nociones limitadas de los principios preventivos del programa y disorcem su objetivo al utilizarlo como medio atendimiento médico.
