Efeito de um dentifrício dessensibilizante na sensibilidade trans e pós clareamento dentário de consultório: um estudo piloto.

Although the in office tooth whitening is an effective procedure a high frequency sensitivity during and after the application of bleaching agent is still reported. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a desensitizing toothpaste in controlling the sensitivity generated by in office bleaching. This is a randomized double-blind clinical trial. It was carried out with 10 patients divided into two groups according to the type of used dentifrice (Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief - desensitizing; or Colgate Total 12 - control) (n = 10). The subjects used the dentifrices for seven days and then received the bleaching procedure with 35% hydrogen peroxide. In each patient, there were two sessions of tooth whitening, each session had two applications of 20 minutes duration. The color grading was performed prior to and after tooth whitening with Vitapan Classical scale, organized as order value (Vita Zahnfabrik. H. Rauter GmbH & Co., Bad Sackingen, Germany). The sensitivity was assessed using a visual analogue pain scale and recorded in a "sensitivity diary". The results showed no significant differences between sessions to the same toothpaste (P>0,05) or among toothpastes for the same session. It was concluded that the use of the dentifrice base of calcium carbonate and arginine for 21 days before and throughout the period of in office tooth bleaching treatment did not reduce the intensity of tooth sensitivity perceived by the patient in the weeks of treatment.
