The current environmental degradation observed in urban centers is consequence of the abrupt changes in the land use and occupation. Such changes have reduced the quality life of population who live in this environment. Among the most recurrent urban environmental problems are floods, landslides, heat islands, air pollution and public health problems related to lack of basic sanitation. In the face of the scenario, population that has lower incomes is more punished, as it is often forced to occupy areas of risk and does not have enough income to invest in improvements that promote the internal comfort of the building where they live. In this context, the green roof, when applied on a large scale, is a mitigating measure of most of the urban problems listed, bringing benefits both in the global sphere (city) and in the local sphere (residence). This device retains part of the rainwater, reduces its input and delays its arrival in the urban drainage system. In addition, it promotes a reduction of the temperature gradient between an external and internal surface of the building, contributing to improve the thermal comfort in the internal environment. However, there are costs associated with the deployment and maintenance of a green roof, which may determine the feasibility or not of the deployment of this device. The objective of this research was to raise the cost of installing and maintaining a green roof in a popular building in Natal/RN. For this, a building model was defined to be adapted to receive the device, whose components were also determined in the study. It was also observed a temporal distribution of rainfall in the city, a factor that exerts a direct influence on the green roof maintenance cost. The study revealed a high cost of installation, considering the income of the inhabitants of buildings’ popular standard, however, the maintenance cost was shown accessible to the target audience.
