Resumo: Parental care is any form of parental behavior that seems to increase offspring fitness (CLUTTON-BROCK, 1991). Such works are rare in cetaceans and until the present, this is the first to analyze the intensity of parental care in the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis). The investigation was conducted using two measures: longitudinal care and transversal care. Parental care occurred when the mother located herself longitudinally ahead of its offspring (longitudinal position 1) and when was between the boat and the offspring (transversal position 1). The absence of parental care occurred when the offspring located itself ahead of the mother (longitudinal position 2) and when it was between the boat and the mother (transversal position 2). For each of these measures it was investigated the influence of 4 variables: age class (calves and juveniles), behavior (travelling and feeding), group size and seasonality. 28 boat trips were conducted equally through all seasons, totalizing 42.1 observation hours. It were observed 1,343 groups, in which 1,268 (94.4%) had offspring as their members. Mood?s median test showed statistical difference between the time offspring received longitudinal (?? = 77.98; d.f.. = 1; p = 0.0001) and transversal care (?? = 158.42; g.l. = 1; p = 0.0001). Median time in which mothers located themselves in position 1 was of 40 seconds (longitudinally) and 42 seconds (transversally), while for position 2 was of 30 seconds longitudinally and 26 transversally. When compared with the group size, median group size for longitudinal position 1 was of 18 individuals, while for position 2 it was 15. Mood?s median test showed statistical significance (?? = 15.86; g.l. = 3; p = 0.001). The same test also showed significance for transversal care (?? = 57.44; g.l = 3; p = 0.0001). Median for position 1 was of 18 and for position 2 was 12. Parental care intensity was significant for behavior (Longitudinal: N = 2,655; H3 = 188.1; P = 0.0001; Transversal: N = 2,633; H3 = 245.1; P = 0.0001), age class (Longitudinal: N = 2,656; H3 = 92.1; P= 0.0001; Transversal: N = 2,656; H3 = 156.9; P = 0.0001). Results indicate that parental care is intensely performed both longitudinally and transversally. Data showed that in larger group sizes, care is more intense, possibly as a way of maximizing hydrodynamic gains and to minimize risks. Parental care was more intense during travelling, since feeding dynamics is more random. Moreover, calves received a higher intensity of care than juveniles, suggesting a possible parentoffspring conflict.

Submitted by Sandra Pereira (srpereira@ufrrj.br) on 2020-07-23T15:11:21Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2011 - Rodrigo Hipolito Tardin Oliveira.pdf: 754160 bytes, checksum: 8b9c82bd9141322bc5de6239beca208b (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-07-23T15:11:21Z (GMT). description Parental care is any form of parental behavior that seems to increase offspring fitness (CLUTTON-BROCK, 1991).
