The extension appeared in the United States in the late nineteenth century as educational initiative to create a teaching for the agricultural sector, and encourage research in the area. With this educational character and aimed at advancing the primary sector was adopted in several countries, and the model implemented in Brazil, always attached to federal institutions. He is currently strong debate the role of rural extension service to be practiced by institutions of higher education and its contribution to the training of academics. Faced with this situation was proposed to ascertain the perception of undergraduate students of the Bachelor of Animal Science IFMT Campus St. Vincent on the importance of the practice of rural extension to their professional training. Seeking to address this issue, a group of students in this course were invited to participate in an activity extension with producers of milk and dairy products coming from the family farm in the municipality of Campo Verde - MT, providing interchange between students and producers to stimulate exchange experiences. To this end was designed a project entitled "Diagnosis of milk production properties Settlement St. Anthony's Bounty: interaction between academics IFMT Saint Vincent and the producers," performed by the participating students and guided by the research coordinator, who supported the collection data to verify the hypothesis. Through the results achieved in this work we note that perception of academics in promoting the extension is that it contributes significantly to the construction of technical knowledge on the professional and personal growth and the formation of the professional profile of these. Note also that this practice improves interpersonal relationships, demonstrating the printed positive impact on students' perceptions and hence on the quality of professional future. Based on these results is justified to encourage the promotion of rural extension for institutions that offer agricultural education, preferably activities seeking to work in an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary way, reaching more students and ensuring less limited and more effective teaching, and provide benefits direct and indirect for producers and for society.
