Resumo: African mahoganies (Khaya spp.) have high wood quality, especially for uses in the furniture industry, decoration and interior finishes, musical instruments and shipbuilding. Recently, African mahoganies have stimulated the interest of foresters and investors in the tropics. Normally, the African mahoganies stands have been established under monocultures with all trees established at the same time, in densities ranging from 280 to 1100 plants ha-1 with harvest projections to 18 years. Alternatively, there is the possibility of planting African mahogany under different arrangements of agroforestry systems (AFS). When these systems are handled harmonically with the secondary succession, they are called successional agroforestry systems. However, little is known about the growth and production of Khaya spp. in more complex productive systems. In addition, few studies have addressed the management of natural regeneration in successive AFS established in areas abandoned by agricultural activities. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate silvicultural aspects and ecosystem servides in mixed-species plantations and successional AFS with Khaya sp. under different level of diversity and natural regeneration management. The studies were conducted on Fazenda Sucupira, Valen?a, Bahia state, Brazil. A completely randomized block design experiment was established in January 2016 on a production stand of Khaya ivorensis e Khaya anthotheca planted on alternate rows (spacing 7 m x 3 m) in November 2013. The following treatments were established: (T1) mixed plantation of African mahogany without conduction of natural regeneration; (T2) mixed plantation of African mahogany with selective conduction of natural regeneration; (T3) AFS with African mahogany without conduction of natural regeneration; (T4) AFS with African mahogany with selective conduction of natural regeneration (successional AFS). The present thesis was organized in three chapters. In chapter I, the adjustment of hypsometric and volumetric equations for K. ivorensis and K. anthotheca was established in mixed and successional agroforestry systems stands. The selected equations subsided chapter II that evaluated the growth and yield of both Khaya species established in mixed and successional AFS stands with or without selective management of natural regeneration. In chapter III, it was evaluated the recovery of the ecosystem functions resulting from natural regeneration management in Khaya spp. production systems (mixed and agroforestry stands) established in abandoned agricultural area were evaluated.

Submitted by Jorge Silva (jorgelmsilva@ufrrj.br) on 2021-09-14T09:23:45Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2019 - Felipe Martini Santos.pdf: 7920872 bytes, checksum: 7822a4c241aa521a69755dc76f3dfefb (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-14T09:23:45Z (GMT).
