Resumo: The initial training methods used for Thoroughbred race horse are important because of its importance on the athlete?s future musculoskeletal health. Many young horses start training with a body conditions score (BCS) above ideal. It is common for trainers to adapt a gradual increase in workload on young animals. Exercise affects metabolism in different ways by changes in the muscle enzymes, anaerobic metabolism, cardiorespiratory systems, BCS, and insulin sensitivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of daily training program of 15 Thoroughbred horses with an initial age of 18 months consisting of the first month, trot (4 m/s) sand arena ridden by jockeys for thirty minutes and in the second month, automatic heating walker for 15 minutes and then work alternating trot and canter (6 m/s) mounted for 15 minutes, the third month, automatic heating walker for 15 minutes and work alternating trot, canter and gallop (10 m/s) mounted streak of sand for 15 minutes, at the end of the fourth month warming in automatic walker for 15 minutes, alternating working trot, canter, gallop and sprint (12 m/s) 600 meters in streak sand for 15 minutes, on muscle enzymes, lactate levels, heart and respiratory rates, total body weight and free fat mass, body and neck condition score and insulin sensitivity. Analyzed muscle enzymes included creatin kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH); blood was analyzed complete blood count (CBC), for lactate, basal glucose and insulin. Basal proxies for insulin sensitivity were calculated. Increases in CK, LDH, and lactate were seen after exercise. Conditioning effects included a decrease in CK, increase in lactate after exercise and no changes were observed in LDH or AST. With conditioning there were slight increases in resting red blood cell number, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) between the first and 4th month of conditioning. During the same period a decrease in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and no changes in mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH). Free fat mass, BCS and neck condition scores diminished without changes in total body weight. Heart and respiratory rates increased after exercise from the 1st week to 4th month of conditioning without changes in (T0-T1). No changes in basal glucose and insulin were found, however a significant reduction in beta pancreatic response with conditioning. The results indicate muscle adaptation and improved energy metabolism with the conditioning program.

Submitted by Sandra Pereira (srpereira@ufrrj.br) on 2020-05-20T15:11:39Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2012 - Erica Bertha F?hrich Raupp Bezerra Mello.pdf: 1050522 bytes, checksum: a8d366f1ea19538ef56690d537fded29 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-05-20T15:11:39Z (GMT). description The initial training methods used for Thoroughbred race horse are important because of its importance on the athlete?s future musculoskeletal health.
