Resumo: Environmental education (EE) is one of the main processes for changing the relationship between populations and the environment. In Brazil, it was consolidated in the 1990s and has been applied in different ways in schools and protected areas - also known as conservation units. In Rio de Janeiro State, the municipality of S?o Gon?alo has more than one million inhabitants and one active conservation unit: the Engenho Pequeno Environmental Protection Area (EPAEP). The city has serious socio-environmental problems, such as lack of sanitation and access to treated water, because of its history of disorderly population growth and lack of adequate public policies. In that context, the EPAEP has very low visitation rates, which are not even officially registered. The conservation unit has 13 square kilometers of remnants of Atlantic Forest, but does not have management plan, management council or educational projects. Therefore, the objective of this study is to discuss the use of EE as a strategy to engage school visitation and the participation of different social actors, including the population and the government of the city, in the sustainable management and governance of the EPAEP. It is also a goal of this study to propose an informative material about the conservation unit and its EE activities that can be used as a method of outreach for the area in municipal public schools located closer to headquarters. To accomplished that, we conducted a research about the EE projects in municipal elementary schools around the EPAEP; we recorded the educational activities offered by the conservation unit and which are its main publics; and we studied the performance and relationship between the most expressive social actors involved in the management and governance of the conservation unit. The research methods were: field work, semi-structured interviews and literature review. The theoretical basis of this work considered the concepts of critical EE, EE for biodiversity management, environmental advocacy, participative management and decentralized governance of protected areas. As an additional result, we hope to take the attention of the municipal public management of S?o Gon?alo to the socio-environmental relevance of the EPAEP, to encourage EE activities at the area and to provide information for the beginning of the construction of a participative network that management and governance of the EPAEP.

Made available in DSpace on 2021-07-05T18:57:47Z (GMT).
