To minimize this problem, paints made of heavy metals such as copper have been applied to the hulls. In recent years, owners of boats moored at the Club Naval Charitas (CNC), Niterói, RJ, observed an increase in the occurrence of a polychaete, which I identified as the Serpulidae Hydroides elegans (Haswell, 1883). In this work I characterized H. elegans and discussed its distribution along the Brazilian coast. To assess how copper affects recruitment strategies, growth and reproduction of the polychaete, I deployed PVC plates in the CNC area for three months. I exposed the plates to two treatments: half of the plate was painted with antifouling paint, which has copper as cuprous oxide (Cu2O) as active compound , and the other half with acontrol paint without copper. After 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 days I evaluated the number and size of individuals of H. elegans in treatment and control plates. At the end of the experiment I induced spawning and quantified the number of eggs produced by females. For each sample I also combined the gametes of 10 females and 10 males and evaluated larval production per individual in treatment and control plates and the resistance of the larvae to a copper solution. To assess whether copper also makes individuals and their offspring resistant to other stress factorsI quantified larval and adult survival when exposed to other natural stress factors such as low salinity, high temperature and a source of artificial stress, the acetic acid. H. elegans was most abundant in the plates without copper and this difference in abundance increased over time. But the H. elegans was initially larger in copper plates than inplates without copper, but this difference inverted over time. Copper also affected the reproduction of H. elegans reducing the number of female gametes and larvae, but increased the size of the female gametes. Furthermore, larvae from adults exposed to copper showed higher survival in copper than larvae coming from adult control, but this effects was only observed during the first run of the experiment. Copper exposure did not provide any advantage or disadvantage to the larvae when exposed to other sources of stress: low salinity, high temperature or acetic acid, but in some cases, regardless of ambient conditions, larvae and adults from plates with copper showed higher mortality than those from control plates. The acetic acid induced total mortality of larvae and adults, regardless of their origin. The results show that besides copper reduced fouling by H. elegans, it induces changes in the reproductive biology of the polychaete. Individuals living in environments with copper maximize their reproductive success producing a small number of larvae but more resistant to copper, what lead in some experiments to a lower adult survival, suggesting that the resistance to copper is energetically costly.application/pdfporUniversidade Federal Rural do Rio de JaneiroPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Biologia AnimalUFRRJBrasilInstituto de Ciências Biológicas e da SaúdeBioincrustaçãobioinvasãometal pesadosubstratos artificiaisArtificial substratesbiofoulingbioinvasionheavy metalBiologia GeralEfeitos do cobre em tinta antiincrustante sobre as estratégias de colonização de substrato e reprodução do poliqueta Hydroides elegans na região de Jurujuba, Niterói - RJEffects of copper in antifouling paints on recruitment and reproduction of the polychaeta Hydroides elegans in Niterói - RJinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisALCÂNTARA, F., WASHINGTON, D.C. description O transporte de organismos incrustantes nos cascos de embarcações é um mecanismo importante de introdução de espécies marinhas exóticas, assim como fator preponderante para a navegabilidade dessas embarcações.
