Resumo: The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in dairy cattle of different ages and breeding types was studied in areas selected in the States of Rio de Janeiro and S?o Paulo. At the same time 2 techniques for egg-counts were compared; the prevalence of helminths in milking cattle was also studied and the effect of anthelmintic treatment in milk production. Thirty-six calves were used, resulting from crosses between Friesian red-and-white (HVB) and Guzera, reaved on the Experimental Station Sta. Monica (EMBRAPA) municipality of Valen?a, Rio de Janeiro State. Six groups of six calves were established with members of the breeding types HVB, 7/8 HVB, 3/4 HVB, 5/8 HVB, 1/2 HVB and 1/4 HVB. Fecal samples were collected weekly from the rectum, from birth to approximately 6 months of age. These were examined using the tecknique of Whitlock (1948), with larval cultures according to ROBERTS & O'SULLIVAN (1950), the genera of nematodes being identified using the key of Keith (1953). A mean egg-count/gram of faeces (EPG) showed two peaks, one at 3 months of age and one at 4 months, both with the predominance of Cooperia, followed by Haemonchus. Calves of the types HVB and 3/4 HVB showed higher worm burdens than the other groups examined. The McMaster technique was compared with the modified centrifugation-flotation technique (COX & TODD, 1962) with sugar, for the identification and counting, of eggs; in 100 samples from adult cattle, the first technique was positive in only 30% of cases, the second detected 95% of cases. For the estimation of the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in milking cattle, faecal samples were collected from the rectum of 845 cows boxed in 25 properties in the States of S?o Paulo (17) and Rio de Janeiro (8); the samples were examined using the modified centrifugationflotation technique (for EPG) and larva culture to identify the genera of nematodes present. The prevalence of latter was 72.7%, cestodes 3.3%, the number of eggs per 5 gm of faeces varied between 0 - 1179. In decreasing order of occurrence, the following genera were identified: Cooperia, Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus, Trichuris and Oesophagostomum. Moniezia was also encountered. The importance of treatment of cows in lactation was studied in 370 animals in a farm at Tr?s Rios, RJ. The treated animals (174) received a single dose of 5mg/kg albendazole, and theirs production was superior to that of the control animals 58 (196) by 69 gm, 539 gm and 1,125 gm milk/cow/day at 30, 60 and 90 days post-treatment. These increases in production were statistically significant (p<0.01), calculated with the test ("Student's t").

A produ??o de leite das vacas tratadas superou a das vacas controle (196 animais) em 69 g, 539 g e 1.125 g de leite/vaca/dia, respectivamente aos 30, 60 e 90 dias ap?s o tratamento, e esses aumentos de produ??o foram estatisticamente significativos a n?vel de p<0,01 calculados pelo teste "Student's t".Submitted by Celso Magalhaes (celsomagalhaes@ufrrj.br) on 2020-10-29T17:42:46Z No. of bitstreams: 1 1981 - Milton Morais de Lima.pdf: 430801 bytes, checksum: 9a7a60b583c25d07b356835b052b3cc8 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-10-29T17:42:46Z (GMT). description The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in dairy cattle of different ages and breeding types was studied in areas selected in the States of Rio de Janeiro and S?o Paulo.
