The maintenance of the biodiversity of Cerrado bioma depends, amongst other factors, of the relation man - environment. The objective of the present study was to establish local references on the types of vegetal covering (open pasture and forest plantation), succession stadium, soil and landscape in the municipality of Rio Pardo de Minas (MG). For such, it was chosen a region of traditional agriculture that has being confronted with the forest exploration of the eucalyptus, in the North region of Minas Gerais, municipality of Rio Pardo de Minas. In this region an ample characterization of the physical environment of the ?gua Boa watershed was made, applying methodologies and strategies of basic study to environmental planning. The area is representative of the social environmental conditions of the agricultural communities of Rio Pardo de Minas. Information regarding neighboring areas, cultivated with the monoculture of eucalyptus, invader to the Cerrado bioma, and with traditional agriculture, was also obtained. The vegetal extractive potential of the soils and plateaus areas, locally called chapadas was characterized. The vegetacional parameters in the areas of abandoned eucalyptus, where the cerrado vegetation was in its initial phase of regenerating, comparing with the original conditions, were studied. The results showed that the chapadas present potential for diversified use, when considered the tree-shrub component of natural occurrence in these areas. Differences between the environments identified by the local knowledge were confirmed, through the analysis of Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC - Dendrogram) and of the principal component analysis (the PCA). The variables of highest relevance for this separation of environments were: the soil attributes (physical and chemical), when the environments were homogeneous in the structure and composition of the native vegetation; and the vegetacional parameters (diversity, uniformity, density and importance) when compared environments in different soil classes, as Oxisols in comparison to the Entisols. It was evidenced that a model of vegetal extractives potential for the region must consider, beyond the soil characteristics, vegetacional aspects and those of the local knowledge about the environments.
