Resumo: The species Neospora caninum and its clinical disease neosporosis have advanced considerably among domestic animals. In the first decade after the identification of the species and the description of the clinical manifestations, it was characterized as responsible for causing encephalitis and hind limb paresis in dogs. Even though, it is a disease that can even be fatal in dogs, it has been in the background at the veterinary clinic. This study aims to bring a general clinical view about the natural infection of the disease in dogs, their observed clinical manifestations, as well as the ophthalmological findings in seroreagent dogs to N. caninum. For this purpose, medical records of 201 dogs, seen at an Animal Health Clinical Centre located in the City of Teres?polis, RJ, were reviewed. Animals were included which, for some reason, the complaint and the clinical manifestations made them suspect of neurological and/or muscular disease. As an exclusion criterion, those for whom other diseases were diagnosed that justified their clinical condition. In addition to the complete blood count, the ELISA results were evaluated, and those animals with IgG titers greater than or equal to 1/50 were considered positive, this being the cutoff point used. The percentage found in the medical records included in this study was 39.80% of animals sera-reactive for N. caninum, where the majority of the animals examined were characterized as mixed breed, where the percentage of seroreagents was higher than that observed in animals with pure breed. Given the statistical significance of masticatory muscle atrophy and proprioceptive deficit, present in seroreagent animals, such signs deserve special attention for the clinical suspicion of N caninum infection. Important ophthalmic manifestations such as chorioretinitis and optic neuritis could be identified in seroreactive animals to N. caninum, without the presence of coinfection. To spay could be considered a preventive factor in the congenital infection of puppies in seroreagents bitches. The age range between one and seven years was important in this study, as it included a greater number of seroreactive animals to this etiological agent. Hematological values could not be considered as determinants in the diagnosis of natural infection of N. caninum in dogs attended in Teres?polis, RJ, except when there was a concomitant infection with Ehrlichia canis natural infection.

Na primeira d?cada ap?s a identifica??o das esp?cies e a descri??o das manifesta??es cl?nicas, esta esp?cie foi caracterizada como respons?vel por causar encefalite e paresia de membros posteriores em c?es. Mesmo sendo uma doen?a que pode at? ser fatal em c?es, ela j? foi comprovada na cl?nica veterin?ria. Este estudo tem como objetivo trazer para a infec??o por N. caninum uma vis?o cl?nica geral sobre a infec??o natural da doen?a em c?es, suas manifesta??es cl?nicas observadas e os achados oftalmol?gicos em c?es sororreagentes. Para tanto, foram revisados os prontu?rios de 201 c?es, atendidos em um Centro Cl?nico de Sa?de Animal localizado na cidade de Teres?polis, RJ. Foram inclu?dos animais que, por algum motivo, a queixa e as manifesta??es cl?nicas os tornavam suspeitos de doen?as neurol?gicas e/ou musculares. Como crit?rio de exclus?o, aqueles para quem foram diagnosticadas outras doen?as que justificaram sua condi??o cl?nica. Al?m do hemograma completo, os resultados do ELISA foram avaliados e os animais com t?tulos de IgG maiores ou iguais a 1/50 foram considerados positivos, sendo este o ponto de corte utilizado. A porcentagem encontrada nos prontu?rios m?dicos inclu?dos neste estudo foi de 39,80% dos animais soropositivos a N. caninum, onde a maioria dos animais examinados foi caracterizada como ra?a mista, onde a porcentagem de sororreagentes foi superior ? observada em animais com ra?a pura. Dada ? signific?ncia estat?stica da atrofia muscular mastigat?ria e d?ficit proprioceptivo, presentes em animais sororreagentes, essas manifesta??es merecem aten??o especial pela suspeita cl?nica de infec??o por N. caninum. Manifesta??es oftalmol?gicas importantes, como coriorretinite e neurite ?ptica, podem ser identificadas em animais sororreativos a N. caninum, sem a presen?a de coinfec??o. Castrar pode ser considerado um fator preventivo na infec??o cong?nita de filhotes em cadelas sororreagentes. A faixa et?ria entre um e sete anos foi importante neste estudo, pois inclu?a um maior n?mero de animais sororreagentes a esse agente etiol?gico. description The species Neospora caninum and its clinical disease neosporosis have advanced considerably among domestic animals. In the first decade after the identification of the species and the description of the clinical manifestations, it was characterized as responsible for causing encephalitis and hind limb paresis in dogs. Even though, it is a disease that can even be fatal in dogs, it has been in the background at the veterinary clinic. This study aims to bring a general clinical view about the natural infection of the disease in dogs, their observed clinical manifestations, as well as the ophthalmological findings in seroreagent dogs to N. caninum. For this purpose, medical records of 201 dogs, seen at an Animal Health Clinical Centre located in the City of Teres?polis, RJ, were reviewed. Animals were included which, for some reason, the complaint and the clinical manifestations made them suspect of neurological and/or muscular disease. As an exclusion criterion, those for whom other diseases were diagnosed that justified their clinical condition. In addition to the complete blood count, the ELISA results were evaluated, and those animals with IgG titers greater than or equal to 1/50 were considered positive, this being the cutoff point used. The percentage found in the medical records included in this study was 39.80% of animals sera-reactive for N. caninum, where the majority of the animals examined were characterized as mixed breed, where the percentage of seroreagents was higher than that observed in animals with pure breed. Given the statistical significance of masticatory muscle atrophy and proprioceptive deficit, present in seroreagent animals, such signs deserve special attention for the clinical suspicion of N caninum infection. Important ophthalmic manifestations such as chorioretinitis and optic neuritis could be identified in seroreactive animals to N. caninum, without the presence of coinfection. To spay could be considered a preventive factor in the congenital infection of puppies in seroreagents bitches. The age range between one and seven years was important in this study, as it included a greater number of seroreactive animals to this etiological agent. Hematological values could not be considered as determinants in the diagnosis of natural infection of N. caninum in dogs attended in Teres?polis, RJ, except when there was a concomitant infection with Ehrlichia canis natural infection.
