Resumo: This article begins with an examination of the unusual combination of ethnographies on the rural world of Kabylia and statistical methods during Pierre Bourdieu’s pioneering research in Algeria in the 1960s. This work served as inspiration for research on large sugarcane plantations in northeastern Brazil by young teachers and students enrolled in the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS) at the Museu Nacional. In response to the threat represented to the program by the interruption of international funding, a new collective research project was developed by professors and students that focused on Bordieu’s workin Algeria to legitimize the use of anthropological methods in examining issues more commonly analyzed by economists and political scientists. This strategy successfully obtained new sponsors for research-based graduate studies. The authors summarize the investigations conducted within the framework of a project entitled “Employment and Socioeconomic Change in the Northeast,” their contribution to a better understanding of the rural world in Brazil, discussing how they encouraged an intensified dialogue with Bourdieu and his team in France and the development of original forms of scientific cooperation. The massive uprooting of peasants that lived on sugar plantations and their expulsion to urban peripheries since the 1960s in Brazil has deepened the hierarchy established with plantation houses and slave quarters in colonial times.elocation-id: e2230208Received: Jul.9.2022 • Accepted: Oct.17.2022 • Published: Dec.2.2022Original article / Double-blind peer review / Open access
