Resumo: Coffee represented a fundamental system of production and socio-political-cultural organization in the history and trajectory of Brazilian political and social thought. This article analyses in a comparative way the opinions of Monteiro Lobato and Celso Furtado on the coffee economy and its implications for Brazilian society. Both authors understood coffee to be the basis of the agrarian vocation and the transition to modernization. Analyzing comparatively the literary perceptions of Monteiro Lobato and the economic interpretations of Furtado allows us to identify their different perspectives in building a mosaic of interpretations on the place of coffee in Brazilian history.

Este artigo analisa de forma comparada as concepções de Monteiro Lobato e Celso Furtado sobre a economia cafeeira e suas implicações para a sociedade brasileira. Ambos os autores perceberam no café as bases da vocação agrária e de transição para a modernização.
