There are some analyses of the poem “Retrato” by the Brazilian poet and writer Cecília Meireles (1901-1964) that utilize a literary perspective. Some semiotic reflections on it are limited to showing the semantic category of youth/ aging and the changes the subject has undergone due to chronological and psychological time. What distinguishes this article is that it shows that on a deeper level of understanding, there are other semantic categories such as static/dynamic and identity/alterity. On the level of appearance, the “lyric I” enunciates what seems to be a resignation to the aging process. However, on a deeper level, this “I” is influenced by passionate affect, such as nostalgia and melancholy, through which the “I” attempts to resist their consequences.
