This study takes Aeschylus' Oresteia as a starting point for a reflection on the transition from self-guardianship to jurisdiction, which is symbolized by the trial of Orestes and the institution of the Areopagus court. Through a symbolic analysis, the evolution of the human soul is observed as a paradigm of social evolution, with emphasis on the fact that the need for the judge to be ethical is a result of the jurisdictional model itself, expressed through judicial virtues, such as justice, equity and prudence. The study considers that the integrity and good intentions of the judges are essential to the correct application of Law — even in the presence of a system of rules and a hierarchical control apparatus — which serve as guarantees of the authority of the judiciary.
