Perfil epidemiológico do paciente com sepse na UTI do Hospital Universitário de Lagarto-SE

Objective: Identify the sepsis patient’s profile and its impact on their mortality. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, observational study with a quantitative approach which evaluated the epidemiological profile and characteristics of sepsis patients hospitalized at the Adult Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of the University of Sergipe, located in the city of Lagarto-SE, 2016. Results: A total of 85 patients were included, of which 54.2% were male, with a mean age of 60.6 years. The plurality of the patients had comorbidities, specially SAH and DM. There was a sepsis diagnosis on ICU admission in 76.5% of the patients. The main sepsis focus was pulmonary, in 62.3% of the cases. The mean hospitalization time was higher in patients who died. Regarding the outcome, 83.5% of the patients evolved to death. Conclusion: the main profile of the patient admitted to the HUL ICU consists of the elderly male patient with chronic comorbidities, respiratory infection being the origin of most cases of sepsis. This epidemiological profile is similar to the national profile. However, a brazilian above-average mortality was noted. The knowledge of the epidemiological data can aid the diagnosis and early treatment, aiming to improve morbimortality. In adition, these findings reinforce the need to implement a specific protocol in the care of sepsis patients, to reduce hospitalization time and risk of death.
