Resumo: This work analyzes the construction and representation of the character of the “tabaréu”, that is, its constitution as fictional material, in the memorialistic novel Os Tabaréus do Sitio Saracura, by Sergipe writer Antônio F J Saracura. The qualitative analysis of the corpus was based on a previous bibliographic research, having as support, oral and written interviews, as well as a reflection on the regional theme, present in Brazilian literature and criticism, especially from Romanticism. This reflection contributed to show how regional themes have been developed and / or addressed throughout our literary history, allowing to draw parallels with the novel under study. As theoretical references, the studies of CANDIDO (2007 and 2010); RIBEIRO (1995); CASCUDO (2000); and BRAIT (1985) had great relevance to this work.

A análise qualitativa do corpus teve, como base, uma pesquisa bibliográfica prévia, tendo ainda, como suporte, entrevistas orais e escritas, bem como uma reflexão sobre a temática regional, presente na literatura e na crítica brasileira, sobretudo, a partir do Romantismo. Essa reflexão contribuiu para mostrar como os temas regionais têm sido desenvolvidos e/ou abordados ao longo da nossa história literária, permitindo traçar paralelos com o romance em estudo.
